Haiti
Nicolas Orelus has worked in the CDC/UND research laboratories in Haiti on Lymphatic filariasis, Helicobacter pylori, dengue and intestinal parasites since 1995. In his own words Nicolas describes his experiences

My country is one of the least developed countries in the Western Hemisphere, where basic need: education, public health, access to proper hygiene, and food are all the major problems facing the Haitian population. In Haiti there is a lack of knowledge of vector borne diseases, their transmission, and how to prevent them.

In September 2004 I started a MSc course in Biology and Control of Parasite and Disease Vectors at the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine, with the full support of the Lymphatic Filariasis Support Centre and WHO/TDR. The support from the Centre enabled me to further my studies. I attend the MSc course for approximately 11 months and the course comprised of orientation, taught modules (12) (60 credits) and a research project leading to the submission of a dissertation (60 credits).

I have just completed my MSc qualification successfully and I really appreciated the help and support of my sponsors, who place their hope on me for a better Haiti with less public health problems. I truly see myself as potential resource especially for the Haitian LF programme.

Big Thanks again to all my Sponsors,
