Nana
Kwadwo Biritwum is the Deputy Programme Manager of the Ghana Filariasis
Elimination Programme based at the Health Research Unit under the
Policy, Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation (PPME) Division of the
Ghana Health Service but works closely with the Public Health Division
also of the Ghana Health Service. Nana Kwadwo coordinates all activities
of the programme whose present focus is mass drug administration
(MDA) and morbidity control. These activities involve planning of
all programmes activities, social mobilisation for the programme,
providing training for MDA and morbidity control, organisation of
MDA, supervision, monitoring and evaluation. He is also responsible
for and directly participates in all operational research activities
of the programme. |
| The
Lymphatic Filariasis Elimination and Onchocerciasis Control programmes
in Ghana have been merged since 2003. Recently the programme team
has also assumed responsibility for Schistosomiasis and Soil Transmitted
Helminth control in Ghana. Nana Kwadwo therefore has direct oversight
over all these disease control programmes.
Nana Kwadwo
Biritwum is a Medical Doctor and graduated from the School of Medical
Sciences of the University of Science and Technology in Kumasi,
Ghana and also obtained a Master’s in Public Health from the
School of Public Health of University of Ghana in Accra. He is presently
a PhD Research Student with the Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine
and is working on the Epidemiology and Control of Lymphatic Filariasis
in Ghana. His PhD work involves studying the impact of mass drug
administration using Ivermectin and Albendazole in Ghana. The Liverpool
Lymphatic Filariasis Support Centre of the Liverpool School of Tropical
Medicine is providing support for Nana Kwadwo’s PhD work. |
