 !  Margaret Baker (nee Fraser)
Senior Research Assistant
UK

Margaret is a senior research assistant carrying out monitoring and evaluation for the Liverpool LFSC while studying for a PhD.

Margaret’s PhD work has been based in the Dominican Republic. The Dominican Republic national health system is currently undergoing a process of reform and decentralisation and the LF programme is gradually integrating itself into primary health care. The aim of integration is two fold: 1) to sustain the LF programme in the face of reduced external funding; and 2) to strengthen the development of health systems. Margaret’ thesis aims to describe and evaluate the process of integration and it’s impact on the LF programme as well as it’s impact on the health system.

Margaret holds a Masters degree in Control of Infectious Disease from the London School of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, where she did her thesis on Dengue fever control in Colombia. She has also been a guest researcher at the Centre for Disease Control, Atlanta, has worked with Volunteer Services Overseas supporting the Vanuatu Ministry of Health Vector Borne Disease Control program, and has worked for the National Health Services in London as a tuberculosis control project officer.

Margaret would like to thank the Liverpool LFSC, GSK and DFID for making it possible to pursue her studies.

Margaret successfully defended her thesis in January 2008.
